We
provide consultation, comprehensive psychodiagnostic and
neuropsychological assessment for children, adults and families
who have sustained Traumatic Injury, Major Medical Illness
and Chronic Pain.
Our
clinicians have specialized training and experience in rehabilitation
and work cohesively with the treating rehabilitation team
when appropriate. In all cases prompt assessment identifies
the nature of the difficulties and assists individuals in
regaining a sense of mastery, which reduces the impact of
the injury and its psychological consequences on work, family
and quality of life.
Traumatic
Injuries
Traumatic
injuries such as burns, amputations, Complex Orthopedic
Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke
may be particularly stressful and increase an individual's
sense of vulnerability. These types of injuries may also
be accompanied by psychological distress and, in some cases,
significant internal turmoil as the person adjusts to post-injury
status.
Chronic
Pain
Chronic
pain suffers find it difficult to focus on things other
than their pain and lose access to the satisfying things
they once enjoyed. Learning to reduce emotional and physical
tension, can help patients use active and effective ways
of coping with pain and related sources of distress. These
methods may be helpful for achieving goals of reduced medication
dependency, increased enjoyment of activities and relationships,
increased functional capacity and quality of life.
Major
Medical Illness
Families
and individuals may need assistance in dealing with terminal
illness. Psychological support for individuals and families
can assist with mending the family and providing techniques
to increase the individual's sense of dignity and self control.
